destination guide: Hobart
welcome to hobart
Tasmania’s compact capital is a stimulating mix of history and contemporary art and culture – and its southern urban pulse meets wilderness with dramatic results. Risk-taking artists, passionate producers, inventive chefs and soulful heritage bring light and shade to the city.
Venture from the hum of Hobart and see world heritage sites, rainforests, islands and mighty rivers. Discover the many colourful characters, stories and events that have helped shape the city’s intriguing past. Or stroll and explore galleries, theatres and craft shops. Tassie’s southerly offerings will keep you coming back for more.
The cooler climate of Tasmania makes Hobart an ideal place to produce elegant Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. Most of Hobart’s wineries are located in the nearby Coal River Valley which stretches across Cambridge and Richmond. It’s probably best to rent a car or take a tour (see Boutique Wine Tours or Apple Isle Wine Tours) if you want to make a day of it and taste. Some of the more notable wineries include Frogmore Creek, Coal Valley Vineyard, Puddleduck Vineyard and Riversdale Estate complete with French Bistro and Peter Rabbit Garden.
what to do
A trip to Hobart would be incomplete if you missed vibrant Salamanca Market on Saturdays. This is Hobart’s major weekend attraction filled with local artisans, producers and farmers selling their hand made and home grown wares. The 19th century sandstone warehouses that line the market are also now filled with galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. The Farm Gate Market on Sundays is another great market to visit.
The city’s imposing backdrop, kunanyi/Mt Wellington or as the locals call it ‘the mountain’ provides spectacular views on a clear day. Enjoy a tour and beer tasting at iconic Cascade Brewery, stroll the streets of charming Battery Point or enjoy a gourmet walking tour taking in the best of the city’s blossoming food scene.
escape the city
With wilderness on its doorstep, Hobart is the gateway to rugged islands and national parks. Bruny Island is known for its delicious bounty of local produce and wine and the Tasman Peninsula is home to the brutal convict tales and the preserved ruins of the Port Arthur Historic Site (as well as the newly opened Three Capes Track). The Derwent Valley and nearby Mount Field National Park is another great day trip from Hobart – there are options aplenty!
Just shy of Hobart, you’ll also find Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary where you can experience hands on moments with Tasmania’s unique wildlife. Between nearby Cambridge and the historic village of Richmond. Richmond is Australia's finest Georgian village, with the oldest bridge, gaol and Catholic church in the country.
Have you ever been to a hotel that offers an immersive storytelling experience at every touchpoint? From mid-2017 you will find one of Hobart’s soon to be most famous places to stay – MACq01. Each of the 114 rooms and suites tells the story of a separate character with a unique illustration on every door and artefacts relating to the character inside. You’ll also want to swing by the mind blowing Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) an extraordinary collection of artworks - from ancient antiquities to provocative contemporary pieces. Take your time exploring Australia’s largest private museum, described by the museum’s owner as a ‘subversive adult Disneyland’.
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is another local gallery with a fascinating collection representing the natural world. There’s also a number of small galleries and boutique stores to explore and browse the work of local artists.
