destination guide: Melbourne
welcome to melbourne
Melbourne is ranked as one of the most popular cities to live in and travel to by people in the know all over the world. It’s a destination in and of itself as a cultural icon with several districts and also a gateway to some of Australia’s greatest treasures. When you touch down in Melbourne, it’s like arriving in your own little world with endless possibilities everywhere you look.
Whether you’re into architecture, shopping, art, or botanical gardens, music, wine, or adventure, Melbourne has it all. The city is booming with activity and caters to domestic and international travelers, families, adventurists, foodies, and fun-lovers.
Melbourne has museums for everything from science to sports too. And speaking of sports, Melbourne is known for being a sports fan’s dream. Cricket Australia calls Melbourne home and you can catch an Australian Football League (AFL) game at Etihad Stadium or the Melbourne Cricket Ground (locals call it the MCG). Australian Rules Football is life for many who live here with half of the teams calling Melbourne home.
You can also check out the horse races (The Melbourne Cup is held in November), the Australian Open (in January), or the Grand Prix (every March). If you love sports, you’ll really love Melbourne.
You can visit the City Centre to visit the Queen Victoria Market, check out Federation Square (if you’re into architecture) or head up to the top of the Eureka Tower to get a view of the city for on high. There’s a zoo in Parkville, high end shopping on Chapel Street and Toorak Road in South Yarra, and the Woodlands Historic Park, north of the airport.
Melbourne really does have something for everyone.
what to experience
Melbourne is home to many festivals and events all year round. In August, the Melbourne International Film Festival takes place which draws travellers from all over the globe. In October, you can be a part of the International Art Festival, and checkout the Melbourne Comedy Festival at the beginning of autumn.
The Yarra Valley - with over 80 wineries, food markets, and plenty of breweries, the Yarra Valley is the epitome of a beautiful drive through the country. It’s only an hour drive north-east of the city, and many people take a tour bus or hire a car for the day to get there.
The Great Ocean Road - just an hour’s drive south of the city, the Great Ocean Road is exactly what it sounds like. You’ll take in some of the most gorgeous coastline in Australia as you zip down the highway, surf at Bells Beach, or spend some time bushwalking in the rainforest. If you want to get out and “see” the region, make sure you do this.
Grampians National Park - this is the outdoorsman’s dream. The park is filled with hiking trails, and world renowned for its fields of wildflowers (the Gariwereds). You can get there by bus or car and make sure to bring your camera. You’ll likely see koalas, kangaroos, emus, as well as breathtaking waterfalls and lookouts.
Phillip Island - the island is about 2 hours away and is the home of the annual Grand Prix. If you want to see the Penguin Parade or Seal Rocks, this is where you’ll want to visit. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes too so you can eat, drink, and have fun all in one place on Phillip Island.
The Twelve Apostles - this is a magical place accessed by the Great Ocean Road. Each “apostle” is a limestone stack (there are only 8 left) off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park. There’s tons to do here too from food tours, hiking, and rainforest sightseeing.
Mount Buller - whether you want to run, walk, hike, or bike Mt. Buller is the adventurist’s destination of choice for a full day of excitement.
Falls Creek - an Alpine ski resort in the Hume region, Falls Creek is located 350 km outside of Melbourne. If it's winter time and you want to hit the slopes, Falls Creek is a traveler’s favourite place to cool off.
