destination guide: Perth
welcome to utopia
When you get to Perth - you’ll think you’ve just walked into a dream. It’s a place that’s gorgeous and surprisingly serene compared to other cities of its size (with almost 2 million residents) – yet has amazing modern infrastructure and a cultural landscape to be envied. Here you can relax, enjoy the coast, and soak up the perfect climate all year round. And if that doesn’t sound like enough fun, Perth is a doorway to gorgeous island destinations like Rottnest Island and Penguin Island. You’ll find plenty of places to be the only one on the beach, swim in the shallow clear waters with the kids, or get out for a romantic getaway with that special someone.
enjoy the gardens
If nature is what you’re into, Perth has plenty to offer:
Kings Park - Located on the doorstep of the CBD, Kings Park covers over 400 hectares of land and runs along the Swan River. Western Australia is on the map because of Kings Park. With natural bush land, wildlife, and plenty of places to picnic, it’s like walking into a dreamland. The Lotterywest Family Area is a great place for the wee ones as well as Synergy Parkland (both have playgrounds). There are places to eat, check out local art and shop too. Make sure you bring your camera (or smartphone).
what to do
Whether it’s relaxing on one of the country’s best beaches, catching a game of Australian Rules Football (footy) or hanging out with kangaroos at the Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park, Perth has you covered. The most popular beaches here are Scarborough and Cottesloe and you can even swim without attire at Swanbourne (if that’s your thing).
perth is waiting for you
Although it’s a large town, it doesn’t feel like it. Perth is Australia’s postcard picture and a place where you can kick your shoes off and relax with family and friends on the beach. With affordable flights coming into Perth from Sydney and Melbourne, why wouldn’t you visit?
Fremantle - Fremantle (or ‘Freo’, as the locals like to call it) is the port for Western Australia’s capital city Perth, located an easy 30 minute drive away. In Freo you’ll find a city famed for its music and arts scene, cafes and bars, boutique breweries, historic streetscapes and eclectic locals.
Margaret River Region - Local delights abound in the Margaret River region, with a seemingly endless supply of world-class wineries, boutique breweries, gourmet produce and eateries with sweeping vineyard, forest and beach views. A favourite escape for nature-lovers, Margaret River is the only premium wine region in Australia where you can experience stunning beaches, tall-timber forests, dramatic sea cliffs, caves and world-class surf breaks – all within a three hours’ drive south of Perth.
Rottnest Island - Located just a short ferry ride from Perth, Rottnest Island has shot to international fame in recent years largely in part to its native inhabitant – the quokka. The small, furry and very cute marsupial became an internet sensation after an online news source declared it the ‘world’s happiest animal’ – amplifying the social media trend, the #quokkaselfie. You can stay at Hotel Rottnest for the night or pay a couple bucks and get a campsite ($15-ish). There aren’t any cars on the island either so you get to experience what true island living is like when you visit Rottnest.
Penguin Island - If you head about an hour south of Perth you’ll find Penguin Island. This island is home to some of the tiniest little penguins you’ll ever see as well as dolphins, sea birds with gorgeous beaches as they backdrop. You can take a boat tour, kayak, take a dip in the sea, or just simply enjoy a good book on the sand.
Lancelin - If you head out of the CBD and drive about an hour north you’ll find Lancelin. It’s a tiny fishing town with a lot to offer. You’ll feel like a local when you get to windsurf, play on the beach or slide down a sand dune. Lancelin is known for being a Mecca for windsurfers too because the water temperature is always right and the wind is ever present.
out and about
Swan Valley -: If you love wine and beer, the Swan Valley is where you’ll want to spend a day. Located just about ½ hour’s drive outside of Perth, Swan Valley is home to over 150 wineries, distilleries, breweries and more. It’s the oldest wine region in Australia and is known for its large artisan and foodie culture as well.
